The Best Way To Teach Yourself To Play Drums

Introduction

I taught myself for six years before having any kind of formal education on the drums. I share my experience here to save you some time. There are advantages and disadvantages to going it alone when learning a new skill and drums is no exception.

If you’re interested in progressing quickly and avoiding the pitfalls that I encountered, then read on and discover the best way to teach yourself to play the drums.

Simple Beginnings

I first started playing drums in 1998 at the age of 13. Back then, resources were limited compared to what is now available on the internet. There was no Youtube. There was no online video whatsoever.

Streaming music wasn’t even a thing. If you were lucky enough to have an internet connection that was ‘fast’ enough, it still took over 30 minutes to download one song.
